On the night of June 14th 1942, British troops fall back across the Egyptian Desert - and three soldiers find themselves isolated from their brigade. With their Sergeant missing and darkness moving in, they must travel to Gambut before the desert night can swallow them whole.
My one-act stage play The Hammer premiered on 3rd May 2001, with a further two performances on 4th May at The Palatine Arts Centre, Blackpool, Lancashire. The publicity attracted the attention of the Mayor of Blackpool - who gave his support on the opening night - and representatives from The Royal British Legion were also present to receive a donation from the performances.

Four Men And A Man Theatre Company not only brought the script to life on stage, but they also reminded us the true horror of war with a moving montage of images from the Carlton television series, World War II: In Colour, to the powerful music of Craig Armstrong, (composer for the film Plunkett & Macleane).

“The show starts with an almighty bang and drags the audience in from there.” - Alistair Cope
The Hammer was based on several short stories written by my Grandfather, called War Diaries. Although the final script moved away from the original stories, it's life began there. I do have plans to re-work the play, working more closely with War Diaries and lengthening it into two acts. But be assured that when it returns, The Hammer will fall louder than before...
